When severe dental anxiety stands between you and necessary dental care, or when you need extensive treatment completed efficiently, IV sedation provides the ideal solution. At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we use intravenous sedation to create deep relaxation or peaceful sleep throughout your procedure, allowing you to receive comprehensive dental treatment without fear, pain, or memory of the experience.
IV sedation — also called intravenous conscious sedation or twilight sedation — delivers anti-anxiety medication directly into your bloodstream through a small needle placed in your arm or hand. This direct route creates rapid, predictable effects that we can precisely control and adjust throughout your entire procedure.
Think of IV sedation as the "goldilocks" level between oral sedation and general anesthesia — it's deeper than medication taken by mouth, but lighter than complete unconsciousness. Most patients under IV sedation enter a state sometimes called "twilight sleep." You're technically conscious and can respond to questions, but you're so deeply relaxed that you may drift in and out of actual sleep. You'll have little to no memory of your procedure afterward, and you certainly won't remember any anxiety or discomfort.
What makes IV sedation particularly valuable is its adjustability. Unlike oral sedation where you take a pill and get a fixed level of relaxation, with IV sedation we can increase or decrease your sedation depth instantly throughout your treatment. If you need deeper relaxation, we administer a bit more medication. If we need you more responsive, we let the current dose lighten slightly. This precise control makes IV sedation exceptionally safe and allows us to maintain your ideal comfort level from start to finish.

IV sedation serves patients with severe dental phobia, those requiring extensive dental work, or anyone who wants the deepest relaxation possible without general anesthesia. It's our most popular option for wisdom teeth removal, multiple dental implants, and full mouth rehabilitation.
IV sedation is part of our comprehensive range of comfort solutions:
Midazolam (Versed) is our primary sedative — it creates amnesia (memory loss), reduces anxiety, and produces muscle relaxation, with effects wearing off within 1–2 hours. Fentanyl is a pain medication that works synergistically with midazolam to enhance comfort, with very short-acting effects lasting about 30–40 minutes. Propofol provides deeper sedation when needed, creating more profound unconsciousness similar to general anesthesia but lighter and more easily controlled.
When you take medication orally, it must pass through your stomach, get absorbed through your intestinal walls, and travel through your liver before reaching your brain — a process that takes 30–60 minutes and varies based on diet, metabolism, and individual factors. With IV administration, medication enters your bloodstream instantly and reaches your brain within seconds. This provides immediate onset of effects, precise dosing control with real-time response monitoring, adjustable sedation depth, bypass of the digestive system for more predictable effects, and higher reliability with 100% of medication reaching your bloodstream.
We provide different depths ranging from moderate to deep. Moderate (conscious) sedation leaves you very drowsy and relaxed but able to respond to verbal commands — you may sleep but wake easily. Deep sedation brings you to the edge of consciousness, sleeping most of the time but arousable with significant stimulation, with limited memory and awareness. We customize your sedation depth based on your anxiety level, procedure requirements, and personal preferences discussed beforehand.

You'll receive detailed pre-sedation instructions. No food for 8 hours before your appointment (typically from midnight for morning appointments), with clear liquids allowed up to 2 hours before. We'll review all your current medications — some may need temporary adjustment. Bring a complete list including supplements and over-the-counter medications. You must arrange a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and stay with you for the rest of the day. Wear comfortable, loose clothing with short sleeves or sleeves that roll up easily for IV placement.
We confirm your medical history and fasting status, answer remaining questions, and take baseline vital signs. You settle into a comfortable dental chair where we place monitoring equipment — pulse oximeter on your finger, blood pressure cuff on your arm. A trained sedation team member places a small IV line, usually in your arm or hand, involving a brief pinch similar to having blood drawn. Once the IV is in place, there's no ongoing discomfort.
We begin administering sedation medication through your IV. Within 30–60 seconds, you'll feel a warm, relaxed sensation. As the sedation deepens, your eyelids may feel heavy and close. You'll enter "twilight" — aware on some level but deeply relaxed and unconcerned. Your anxiety disappears and time seems to compress dramatically. Throughout your procedure, we continuously monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing. We can adjust your sedation depth at any moment. We still use local anesthetic to numb specific treatment areas, ensuring zero discomfort — most patients don't remember receiving these injections.
After your dental work is complete, we stop administering sedation medication. You'll gradually become more alert over 30–60 minutes while resting in our recovery area under continuous monitoring. You may feel groggy, disoriented, or emotional as you wake — this is completely normal and passes quickly. We ensure you're stable and comfortable before discharge.
Your designated driver takes you home. Rest for the remainder of the day — sleep is normal and encouraged. Have someone stay with you until effects fully wear off (usually 6–8 hours). Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Start with clear liquids, then light foods as tolerated. Most patients feel completely normal by the next morning with no lingering effects. We call to check on your recovery within 24 hours.

Your safety is our absolute priority during IV sedation. We maintain rigorous protocols that meet or exceed all provincial standards:
IV sedation is ideal for virtually any dental procedure, especially:
$500 – $900 CAD
Most dental insurance plans cover IV sedation at 50–80% when medically necessary — particularly for documented severe dental anxiety, complex surgical procedures, special needs patients, and procedures that would be unsafe without sedation.
We provide direct billing to major insurers and accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
When you consider that IV sedation allows you to complete multiple procedures in one visit — avoiding numerous appointment fees, repeated sedation costs, and time off work — it often represents excellent value.
Per-appointment fee depending on duration and complexity. Total cost includes sedation plus the dental treatment being performed.
Our patients consistently rate us 5 stars for gentle, anxiety-free care. Read verified patient experiences on Google.
