About Our Ottawa Dental Clinic

Where Expertise, Compassion, and Medical-Grade Sedation Come Together

At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we've created something unique in Eastern Ontario: a dental practice where fear and anxiety don't have to stop you from getting the care you need. For over 25 years, we've specialized exclusively in sedation dentistry, building the region's only purpose-built facility with medical anesthesiologists on staff and hospital-grade safety protocols.

Our Mission & Patient Philosophy

Our Mission

Our mission is simple but profound: to make dental care accessible to everyone—especially those who have been turned away, felt judged, or avoided treatment due to fear, trauma, or complex medical needs.

Our Core Beliefs:

- Every patient deserves to feel safe, respected, and heard
- Anxiety should never prevent necessary dental care
- Complex medical conditions require specialized expertise, not avoidance
- Children and adults with special needs deserve the same quality care as everyone else
- Transparency in treatment planning and pricing builds trust

Our Approach

Unlike conventional dental practices that add sedation as an afterthought, we designed our entire clinic around it. From our dual general anesthesia suites to our board-certified anesthesiologists to our specially trained dental team, every aspect of our practice exists to deliver calm, comfortable, anxiety-free dentistry.

Why Dental Sedation Ottawa Is Different

1. Purpose-Built Infrastructure

We didn't retrofit a dental office to accommodate sedation—we built a sedation facility that happens to provide dentistry.

2. Medical Anesthesiologists On-Site

Most dental offices offer "sedation" in the form of a single oral medication or nitrous oxide administered by the dentist. That's not what we do. Our team includes two board-certified medical anesthesiologists: Dr. Hesham Talab, MD MSc PhD FRCPC FASE (Fellowship-trained in vascular/thoracic anesthesia, Assistant Professor at University of Ottawa, specialist in perioperative echocardiography, over a decade of experience in dental anesthesia) and Dr. Asad Mirghassemi, MD MSc FRCPC (Anesthesiology residency at University of Ottawa, Fellowship in Perioperative Echocardiography, Master's Degree in Healthcare Quality from Queen's University, specialized in pediatric and complex medical dental cases). This means you receive true deep sedation and general anesthesia—the same level of care you'd receive in a hospital operating room, but in the comfort of a private practice setting.

3. Dr. Koniouchine's Specialized Expertise

Dr. Anatolij Koniouchine has devoted his entire career to sedation dentistry since 2001. A graduate of Université de Montréal with advanced certifications from the Misch Implant Institute, Pankey Institute, and Hands-On Training Institute, he has performed thousands of sedation procedures across all levels of complexity. General dentists across Ottawa, Gatineau, and Eastern Ontario refer their most challenging cases to Dr. Koniouchine because they trust his judgment, skill, and infrastructure.

4. A Team That Understands Fear

Every member of our team—from reception to hygienists to surgical assistants—receives specialized training in working with anxious patients, trauma survivors, and individuals with special needs. We understand that dental anxiety isn't "just nerves." For many patients, it's rooted in past trauma, sensory sensitivities, loss of control, or medical conditions that make traditional dentistry impossible. Our team is trained to recognize these factors and adapt our approach accordingly. You will never be judged here. You will never be rushed. You will always be treated with dignity and respect.

Our Commitment to Patient-Centered Care

Transparency in Treatment Planning

Before any procedure, you'll receive a comprehensive written treatment plan, detailed cost estimates with no hidden fees, clear explanation of sedation options and associated costs, insurance coverage verification, and alternative treatment options when applicable. We never pressure patients into unnecessary procedures. If a tooth can be saved conservatively, we'll recommend that first. If treatment can wait, we'll tell you. Our goal is to earn your trust through honesty, not upsell you through fear.

Communication & Education

We believe informed patients make better decisions. Throughout your care, we explain procedures in clear, non-technical language, use visual aids, models, and digital imaging to show you what we see, answer all questions before, during, and after treatment, provide written post-operative instructions in your preferred language, and follow up by phone after sedation procedures to ensure recovery is progressing well.

Accessibility & Accommodation

We welcome patients of all abilities and work to accommodate diverse needs: wheelchair-accessible facility throughout, multilingual care in English, French, Ukrainian, Russian, and Arabic, sensory-friendly approaches for patients with autism or sensory processing challenges, flexible scheduling for patients with mobility or transportation limitations, and dedicated time and attention—we never rush appointments.

Safety & Sterilization Standards

Our Safety Standards

Patient safety is non-negotiable. We adhere to and exceed RCDSO sterilization protocols: autoclave sterilization of all reusable instruments, single-use disposables whenever possible, medical-grade PPE for all staff, HEPA air filtration systems, regular equipment calibration and maintenance, and comprehensive emergency protocols and crash cart on-site.

During Sedation Procedures

Continuous vital signs monitoring (ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, end-tidal CO2), advanced airway management equipment immediately available, board-certified anesthesiologists managing all sedation levels, post-procedure recovery monitoring until you're stable for discharge, and 24/7 emergency contact line for post-operative concerns.

Commitment to Continuing Education

Ongoing Learning

Dentistry and anesthesiology are constantly evolving. Our team maintains certifications and pursues ongoing education in advanced sedation techniques and pharmacology, implant dentistry and oral surgery innovations, pediatric behavior management and sedation protocols, special needs dentistry, infection control and sterilization updates, and emergency medical response (ACLS, BLS, PALS certifications).

Teaching the Profession

Dr. Koniouchine regularly lectures and teaches other dentists about sedation dentistry best practices, contributing to the broader dental community's understanding of anxiety management and patient safety.

For Referring Dentists

Referral Partnership

We collaborate with general dentists across Eastern Ontario as a referral center for complex and sedation-requiring cases. If you're a dental professional seeking a partner for patients with severe dental anxiety preventing treatment, complex surgical extractions requiring general anesthesia, medically compromised patients needing anesthesiologist oversight, pediatric cases requiring sedation beyond nitrous oxide, or full-mouth rehabilitations best completed in fewer sedation visits.

Community Involvement

Serving Our Community

As a locally owned and operated practice, we're proud to serve the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario community. We accept Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for eligible patients, offer flexible payment options to improve accessibility, provide emergency dental care for patients in acute pain, support local health initiatives and community programs, and maintain partnerships with hospitals and medical specialists for complex cases.
