Inlays & Onlays in Ottawa

Conservative, Precision Tooth Restorations with Anxiety-Free Care

When a tooth has moderate damage—too much for a simple filling but not severe enough to require a full crown—inlays and onlays provide the perfect middle-ground solution. At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we create custom-crafted restorations that preserve maximum healthy tooth structure while offering comprehensive sedation options for completely comfortable, anxiety-free treatment.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are precision-crafted restorations custom-made in a dental laboratory to fit perfectly into or onto your tooth. Think of them as puzzle pieces specifically designed for your tooth—fitting so precisely that they become virtually undetectable parts of your natural tooth structure.

Inlays fit within the cusps (bumps) of your tooth, filling the space between them like a custom-fitted filling. Onlays are larger, covering one or more cusps to protect and strengthen them—like a partial crown that covers just the damaged portion.

Both are typically made from tooth-colored porcelain or composite resin materials that match your natural teeth perfectly. They're significantly stronger than regular fillings and more conservative than full crowns, preserving the maximum amount of your healthy tooth structure.

With proper care, inlays and onlays typically last 10-15 years or longer—comparable to crowns but requiring less tooth removal.

Making Precision Restorations Anxiety-Free

Inlay and onlay procedures require meticulous tooth preparation and attention to detail, which can take more time than simple fillings. At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we ensure every procedure—no matter how long—can be completed in complete comfort without fear or anxiety.

Understanding When These Restorations Are Best

Inlays and onlays work perfectly when you have:

  • Moderate tooth decay or damage—larger than simple fillings can handle
  • Fractured cusps or weakened tooth structure
  • Old, large fillings that are failing or cracked
  • Desire to preserve maximum healthy tooth structure
  • Back teeth (molars and premolars) requiring restoration

The Middle-Ground Solution:

Think of treatment options as a spectrum:

  • Small cavities → Tooth-colored fillings
  • Moderate damage → Inlays and onlays (the sweet spot)
  • Severe damage → Full crowns

Inlays and onlays bridge that middle ground where fillings aren't strong enough but full crowns remove too much healthy tooth structure. This conservative approach preserves your natural tooth as much as possible while providing superior strength and longevity compared to large fillings.

Signs You Might Need an Inlay or Onlay:

  • Old large filling has cracked or developed decay around edges
  • Tooth has fractured cusp but overall structure remains strong
  • Moderate cavity affecting multiple surfaces but not requiring crown
  • Recurring decay under existing large fillings
  • Tooth sensitivity suggesting deep decay but salvageable structure

When Other Options Work Better:

Small cavities are better treated with simple tooth-colored fillings. Teeth with very large cavities, multiple fractures, or after root canal therapy typically need full crowns. Severely damaged teeth beyond repair require extraction.

The Benefits of Precision Restorations

Maximum Tooth Preservation: Inlays and onlays remove only damaged tooth structure, preserving significantly more healthy tooth than crowns (which require 50-70% tooth reduction).
Superior Strength: Laboratory-crafted from solid blocks of porcelain or composite, these restorations are stronger than tooth-built-up fillings placed directly in the mouth.
Exceptional Fit: Computer-aided design and precision laboratory fabrication create near-perfect fit with minimal gaps—superior seal means less cavity risk.
Natural Appearance: Custom-shaded to match your natural teeth perfectly. Porcelain inlays/onlays are virtually undetectable.
Long-Lasting Durability: Typically last 10-15 years or more—significantly longer than large composite fillings (5-7 years average).
Protects Weak Cusps: Onlays strengthen and protect weakened or fractured cusps, preventing further tooth breakdown.
Biocompatible: Porcelain is highly compatible with gum tissues and doesn't expand/contract with temperature like metal fillings.
Easier to Clean: Smooth, polished surfaces resist staining and plaque accumulation better than composite fillings.

What Happens During Treatment

Inlay and onlay procedures typically require two appointments spaced 2-3 weeks apart, similar to crown procedures.

First Appointment (Preparation - 60-90 minutes):

We begin by administering your chosen sedation option. Once you're comfortable and relaxed, we numb the tooth area completely. The dentist carefully removes all decayed and damaged tooth structure using precise instruments, preserving every bit of healthy tooth possible.

For inlays, we prepare a cavity with straight walls and defined angles for the restoration to fit into. For onlays, we also shape the cusps that will be covered. The preparation is more conservative than crown prep—often preserving 50%+ more natural tooth structure.

We take detailed impressions (or digital scans) of the prepared tooth. These go to our dental laboratory where skilled technicians craft your custom inlay or onlay from solid porcelain or composite blocks. We carefully select shades to match your natural teeth.

Before you leave, we place a temporary filling to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent restoration is being made.

Between Appointments:

Typically 2-3 weeks for laboratory fabrication.

Second Appointment (Placement - 45-60 minutes):

At your return visit, we remove the temporary filling and clean the tooth thoroughly. We try in your new inlay or onlay, checking fit, bite, and appearance. The precision fit should feel like a natural part of your tooth.

Once perfect, we bond the restoration permanently using strong dental adhesive and cure it with a special light. We check your bite, make final adjustments, and polish everything smooth. With sedation, both appointments are comfortable and anxiety-free.

Time Required: First appointment 60-90 minutes; second appointment 45-60 minutes.

Aftercare and Long-Term Maintenance

First 24-48 Hours:

Avoid chewing on the restoration side for the first hour after placement to allow bonding to set fully. Some sensitivity to temperature is normal for a few days as your tooth adjusts. This typically resolves within a week.

Daily Care:

  • Brush twice daily, including along restoration margins
  • Floss daily—inlays and onlays need flossing just like natural teeth
  • Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects
  • Use a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Regular dental checkups every six months

Long-Term Success:

With excellent care, inlays and onlays typically last 10-15 years, with many lasting 20+ years. Signs a restoration may need attention include:

  • Visible cracks or chips
  • Sensitivity that doesn't resolve
  • Rough edges or changes in texture
  • Food consistently catching at restoration margins
  • Loose or moving restoration

Regular checkups allow us to monitor the restoration and surrounding tooth, catching any problems early before they become serious.

Call us at (613) 482-0501 if: You experience persistent sensitivity, notice the restoration feels loose, or see visible damage.

Investment in Conservative Restoration

Inlays and onlays typically cost starting at $800-1,400 depending on size and material. While more expensive than large fillings, they're less costly than full crowns and often provide better long-term value.

Consider that:

  • Large fillings cost $300-500 but typically last only 5-7 years
  • Inlays/onlays cost $800-1,400 and last 10-15+ years
  • Crowns cost $1,200-2,000 but remove significantly more tooth structure

Over a 15-year period, a quality inlay or onlay often costs less than repeatedly replacing failed large fillings—while preserving more of your natural tooth.

Most dental insurance plans cover inlays and onlays at 50% when medically necessary. We provide direct billing to major insurance companies and accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
