Once your dental implants have successfully integrated into your jawbone, they need beautiful, durable teeth to restore your smile. Implant-supported crowns and bridges are the custom-made restorations that attach to your implants, completing your tooth replacement. Unlike crowns and bridges supported by natural teeth, implant restorations preserve your healthy teeth and provide unmatched stability and longevity. At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we specialize in making every step of the implant process comfortable through comprehensive sedation options—from mild relaxation to complete sleep—so you can complete your smile restoration without fear or anxiety.
Think of dental implants as the foundation of a building and crowns or bridges as the visible structure built on top. The implant itself—the titanium post in your jawbone—serves as an artificial root. The crown or bridge is the visible tooth (or teeth) that sits on top, providing the appearance and chewing function you need.
Implant-Supported Crowns replace single missing teeth. After your implant heals, we attach a connector piece called an abutment, then place a custom-made crown on top. This creates a complete artificial tooth that looks and functions exactly like your natural teeth.
Implant-Supported Bridges replace multiple consecutive missing teeth using fewer implants than missing teeth. For example, if you're missing three teeth in a row, we typically place two implants (one at each end of the gap) and create a three-unit bridge that spans between them. The bridge is permanently attached to the implants and cannot be removed.
The key difference from traditional tooth-supported crowns and bridges is that implant restorations don't require grinding down healthy teeth for support. They stand independently on their implant foundations. This preservation of healthy tooth structure is one of the most significant advantages of implant dentistry.
Implant crowns and bridges are typically made from high-quality materials like porcelain, zirconia, or a combination of materials chosen for strength, aesthetics, and biocompatibility. Your restoration is custom-designed to match your natural teeth in color, shape, size, and translucency—so seamlessly that even you'll forget which teeth are restorations.

One crown replaces one missing tooth. The crown attaches to the implant via an abutment (connector piece). Perfect for individual missing teeth anywhere in your mouth. Can be cemented or screw-retained depending on location and clinical factors. Learn more about single tooth implants
Multiple teeth supported by two or more implants. Common configurations include:
These bridges are permanently fixed to the implants—they feel like natural teeth and never need removal. Explore multiple teeth implants
Complete upper or lower arch of teeth supported by multiple implants (typically 4-8 implants per arch). These extensive restorations replace all teeth in an arch, including popular techniques like All-on-4. Discover All-on-4 implants
Full-arch prostheses that combine a metal or zirconia framework with acrylic or composite teeth. Extremely strong and durable, ideal for patients with heavy bite forces or grinding habits.
The restoration type recommended for you depends on how many teeth you're replacing, where they're located, your bite forces, aesthetic goals, and budget.

Modern dental technology offers several excellent materials for implant crowns and bridges. We'll recommend the best option based on the restoration's location, your bite, aesthetic requirements, and preferences:
A metal base for strength with porcelain layered on top for aesthetics. Very durable and time-tested. Can occasionally show a dark line at the gum line. More affordable than all-ceramic options. Good for back teeth where ultimate aesthetics are less critical.
No metal—just beautiful, translucent ceramic that looks incredibly natural. Excellent for front teeth where aesthetics matter most. Modern ceramics like eMax are quite strong, though not as strong as zirconia. Best color matching to natural teeth.
Extremely strong white ceramic material—the strongest aesthetic option available. Can be layered with porcelain for maximum aesthetics or used solid for maximum strength. Excellent for both front and back teeth. Biocompatible and stain-resistant. Premium option with superior durability and appearance.
Highly durable and conservative of tooth structure. Some patients prefer gold for back teeth due to exceptional longevity. Less aesthetic but unmatched strength and wear properties.
Combination of materials optimizing both strength and aesthetics. For example, zirconia framework with porcelain overlay, or titanium base with ceramic crown.
We'll discuss material options during your consultation, considering your specific needs, preferences, and budget. All our materials are high-quality, biocompatible, and designed for long-term success.

Once your dental implants have successfully integrated (typically 3-6 months after placement), you're ready for your final restorations. Here's what the process involves:
If healing abutments haven't been placed yet, we attach final abutments to your implants. Abutments are small connector pieces that protrude through your gums, providing the foundation for your crown or bridge. This minor procedure typically requires only local anesthesia, though sedation is available.
We take precise impressions or digital scans of your mouth, capturing the exact position of your implants, the relationship to surrounding teeth, and your bite. For front teeth, we take shade photographs in natural lighting to ensure perfect color matching. If you're receiving a large restoration, we may take additional measurements of your facial features and smile design preferences.
Our skilled dental laboratory receives your impressions and designs your custom restoration. Technicians carefully craft each crown or bridge to match your natural teeth in color and translucency, shape and contour, size proportions, surface texture, and bite relationship. For complex cases, we may schedule a try-in appointment to verify fit, aesthetics, and function before final fabrication.
Once your restoration is complete, you return for placement. We remove any temporary crowns or bridges, clean the abutments thoroughly, try in your new restoration to verify fit, color, and comfort, make any minor adjustments needed, secure the restoration (cement or screw-retain depending on design), check and refine your bite, and provide care instructions.
You leave with your completed smile—beautiful, functional teeth that look completely natural.
Crowns and bridges can attach in two ways. Cemented restorations are permanently bonded to the abutments, similar to traditional crowns—cannot be removed non-destructively. Screw-retained restorations have small access holes where screws secure the crown to the implant. The access holes are filled with tooth-colored composite. Screw-retained restorations can be removed for maintenance if needed. We'll recommend the best attachment method for your specific case.

Implant-supported restorations offer distinct advantages over traditional tooth-supported crowns and bridges:
Your implant restorations require care similar to natural teeth:
Contact us if you experience loosening of the crown or bridge, gum inflammation or bleeding around implants, persistent discomfort, or broken/chipped restorations.
With proper care, implant crowns and bridges have excellent longevity. While the restoration may eventually need replacement due to normal wear (typically 15-20+ years), the implants themselves usually last a lifetime.
$1,500-2,500
$4,500-7,000
$7,000-10,000
$8,000-15,000
These costs are for the restorative phase only—implant placement costs are separate. See our implant procedure pages for complete treatment costs.
Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of implant crowns and bridges, often 50% up to annual maximums. Coverage varies significantly by plan. We provide direct billing to major insurers and work with you to maximize your benefits. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) may provide coverage for eligible patients.
