What Is Digital Smile Design?

Digital smile design is a planning process that combines art, science, and technology to create a virtual preview of your future smile. Using photographs, digital impressions, and specialized software, we design your ideal smile and show you exactly what it will look like—before any treatment begins.

Think of it as the blueprint phase of a renovation. You wouldn't rebuild your kitchen without seeing plans first, and you shouldn't transform your smile without a clear vision either. Digital smile design removes guesswork and ensures you, your dentist, and the dental laboratory all share the same understanding of the final goal.

This isn't a rough sketch or generic "before and after" from someone else's treatment. This is your face, your teeth, and your customized design showing the exact color, shape, and alignment we'll create.

Why Digital Smile Design Matters:

  • • See realistic results before treatment starts
  • • Provide input and request changes to the design
  • • Ensure your expectations align with what's achievable
  • • Communicate your vision clearly to the entire dental team
  • • Reduce anxiety by eliminating uncertainty about outcomes
  • • Make confident decisions about proceeding with treatment

Anxiety-Free Consultation and Treatment

The smile design consultation itself requires no dental work—just photographs, impressions, and conversation. It's completely painless and non-invasive. However, once you decide to proceed with your smile transformation, we offer comprehensive sedation options to ensure every step remains comfortable and stress-free.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Mild relaxation for shorter cosmetic procedures when you have minimal anxiety. Effects wear off within minutes so you can resume your day immediately.

Oral Sedation

Take prescribed medication before treatment to achieve moderate drowsiness and deep relaxation. Ideal for longer procedures or moderate nervousness. You'll need a ride home.

IV Sedation

Continuous intravenous sedation provides profound relaxation. Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure while remaining technically conscious. Perfect for extensive smile makeovers requiring several hours.

General Anesthesia

Complete sleep administered by our board-certified medical anesthesiologists (Dr. Hesham Talab, MD MSc PhD FRCPC FASE and Dr. Asad Mirghassemi, MD MSc FRCPC). Zero awareness of treatment—you simply wake up with your new smile already complete. Hospital-grade safety for severe anxiety or complex cases.

Complete Your Smile in Fewer Visits

Because your smile is fully designed and planned before treatment begins, and because sedation allows longer appointments, many patients complete their entire transformation in just 1-3 treatment visits instead of 6-10 separate appointments.

Creating Your Custom Smile Design

1

Initial Discussion (30-45 minutes)

Your consultation begins with conversation, not cameras. We want to understand what specifically bothers you about your current smile, what you love and want to preserve, your aesthetic goals and preferences, your lifestyle and personality, any functional concerns, timeline considerations and budget parameters. Your goals—not our assumptions—drive the design.

2

Digital Records Collection (30 minutes)

We gather the data needed to create your design: high-resolution photographs from multiple angles, close-up images of your teeth, gums, and bite, full-face photos showing your smile in context, digital impressions (scans) of your teeth and bite, video of your smile in motion, and X-rays if not recently taken.

3

Smile Design Creation (Between Appointments)

Our cosmetic dentistry team uses specialized software to digitally design your new smile, considering facial symmetry and proportions, your unique features, skin tone, and age, tooth shape, size, and color that complement your appearance, current dental condition and what's structurally possible, and your stated preferences.

4

Design Review and Refinement (45-60 minutes)

At your second appointment, we present your custom smile design(s) on a large screen, showing side-by-side before and after comparison, close-up views of proposed tooth shapes and shades, full-face photos showing how your new smile harmonizes with your features. Want teeth slightly whiter? More rounded? We refine together until you're completely satisfied.

5

Treatment Planning and Next Steps (30 minutes)

Once the design is finalized, we create your detailed treatment plan including specific procedures required, number of appointments and estimated timeline, comprehensive cost breakdown with financing options, sedation recommendations, and before-starting considerations. You leave with a printed copy—no pressure to proceed immediately.

Total Consultation Time: Approximately 2-3 hours across two appointments separated by 1-2 weeks.

Previewing Every Aspect of Your Transformation

Tooth Color and Shade

See exactly how white your teeth will be. Compare different shade options from natural ivory to bright Hollywood white. Ensure the color harmonizes with your skin tone and appears age-appropriate.

Tooth Shape and Size

Preview how different tooth shapes (rounded, square, natural, or styled) look on your face. Adjust tooth length and width for proper proportions. See how size changes affect your entire smile's appearance.

Alignment and Spacing

Visualize correction of crookedness, gaps, or crowding without actually moving teeth. See how "instant orthodontics" with veneers would look compared to actual orthodontic treatment.

Gum Line and Smile Arc

Preview gum contouring results showing a more even smile line. See how reducing a "gummy smile" changes your appearance. Visualize the ideal smile arc curvature.

Full Facial Harmony

Understand how your new smile affects your entire face, not just your teeth. See the rejuvenating effect of a smile makeover on perceived age. Preview how your enhanced smile changes your overall attractiveness and approachability.

Is This Consultation Right for You?

Smile Design Is Ideal For:

  • • Anyone considering cosmetic dentistry but unsure about specific treatments
  • • Patients wanting multiple cosmetic improvements addressed together
  • • People nervous about results not meeting expectations
  • • Those needing to communicate complex aesthetic goals to their dentist
  • • Anyone investing significant money and wanting guaranteed satisfaction
  • • Perfectionists who need detailed planning and clear visualization
  • • Patients choosing between different treatment approaches

Not Necessary For:

Very minor procedures like small chips or single bonding repairs typically don't require full digital smile design. Simple teeth whitening outcomes are generally predictable without detailed design.

Your dentist will advise whether consultation makes sense for your specific situation. Even if you're considering a single procedure like veneers, smile design consultation provides valuable reassurance by showing exactly what those veneers will look like installed.

Moving Forward After Consultation

If you decide to proceed with treatment, your approved smile design becomes the roadmap for everything that follows. The design is shared with our dental laboratory, ensuring the veneers, crowns, or other restorations they fabricate match your approved design precisely.

Treatment Typically Involves:

  1. Any necessary preparatory work (gum treatment, cavity fillings)
  2. Tooth preparation for veneers, crowns, or other restorations
  3. Temporary restorations placed (if needed between appointments)
  4. Final restorations fabricated to match your design
  5. Placement and final adjustments
  6. Post-treatment review and care instructions

Throughout treatment, we reference your smile design constantly to ensure the final result matches your preview exactly. If anything doesn't meet the approved design, we correct it before you leave—that's our commitment.

Investing in Confidence Before Treatment

Smile Design Consultation

$150-300

Often credited toward treatment

This consultation fee covers: 2-3 hours of doctor and specialist time, digital photography and impression materials, advanced smile design software usage, custom design creation and refinement, detailed treatment planning, and comprehensive cost estimates.

Most patients find this investment invaluable: It prevents expensive mistakes by ensuring satisfaction before irreversible tooth preparation. It reduces anxiety by eliminating uncertainty about results. It allows informed decision-making with complete information. Many patients who were hesitant about cosmetic dentistry gain confidence to proceed after seeing their beautiful smile preview.

If you decide to move forward with treatment, we typically credit the consultation fee toward your final treatment cost.
