Walk in with stained, yellowed teeth and leave one hour later with a brilliantly white smile. At Dental Sedation Ottawa, our professional in-office teeth whitening delivers immediate, dramatic results using advanced light-activated technology and maximum-strength bleaching gel—all supervised by experienced dental professionals to ensure safety, comfort, and stunning outcomes.
In-office whitening—sometimes called "power whitening" or "chairside whitening"—is the fastest, most effective way to dramatically brighten your smile. Using professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel (25-40% concentration) activated by specialized LED light or laser, we can lighten your teeth 6-10 shades in a single 60-minute appointment.
This is fundamentally different from at-home whitening (which takes weeks) or over-the-counter products (which produce minimal results). In-office treatment harnesses the strongest legally available bleaching formulas, combined with light activation technology that accelerates the chemical whitening process, delivering in one hour what might take weeks or months through other methods.
Upcoming weddings, job interviews, graduation photos, milestone birthdays, class reunions, dating after divorce, career changes, or simply wanting immediate gratification. If you have an important event and want your brightest possible smile without waiting weeks, in-office whitening is your solution.
In-office whitening itself is painless—most patients feel nothing during treatment. However, if you experience dental anxiety even during routine procedures, or if you're combining whitening with other cosmetic work, we offer comprehensive sedation options.
Mild, pleasant relaxation that makes your appointment feel shorter and more enjoyable. You remain fully conscious and aware but calm and comfortable. Perfect for patients with mild anxiety about dental visits. Effects wear off within 5 minutes so you can drive yourself home and return to work immediately. Learn more about nitrous oxide
Prescribed medication taken before your appointment creates moderate drowsiness and significant anxiety reduction. Ideal when combining whitening with other procedures like bonding or gum contouring in the same visit. You'll need someone to drive you home. Explore oral sedation
For patients undergoing comprehensive smile makeovers where whitening is one component among several procedures (veneers, bonding, crowns), IV sedation provides deep relaxation throughout extended appointments. Most patients have minimal memory of treatment. Discover IV sedation
Complete sleep administered by our board-certified medical anesthesiologists (Dr. Hesham Talab, MD MSc PhD FRCPC FASE and Dr. Asad Mirghassemi, MD MSc FRCPC) is available for severe dental phobia or when whitening is part of extensive full-mouth rehabilitation. Hospital-grade safety in our comfortable clinic. Learn about general anesthesia
Combining Multiple Procedures: Many patients choose to whiten teeth first, then immediately have veneers placed, bonding completed, or other cosmetic work finished—all in a single sedated appointment. This approach dramatically reduces the total number of visits needed and means just one recovery period.
Questions? We're here to help.
Your appointment begins with shade documentation. We photograph your teeth from multiple angles and use a dental shade guide to record your starting color. This allows dramatic before-and-after comparison and helps track results.
We perform a quick examination to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening. If needed, we do light polishing to remove surface plaque or debris that might block whitening gel effectiveness.
Your comfort and safety are our priorities. We carefully protect your gums, lips, and tongue using cheek retractors to hold lips away from teeth, protective barrier gel painted along gum line to prevent irritation, rubber dam or similar shields covering gums completely, and safety eyewear to protect from bright activation light.
Once protection is in place, we apply professional-strength whitening gel evenly to all visible tooth surfaces (typically front 8-10 upper teeth and 8-10 lower teeth). The gel coating is generous but not excessive.
We position the specialized LED activation light or laser in front of your mouth. The specific wavelength of light accelerates the bleaching chemical reaction, helping peroxide penetrate enamel more effectively. You simply relax comfortably with your mouth open while the light does its work.
Each activation cycle lasts 12-20 minutes depending on the specific system used. After the first cycle, we carefully remove the gel, evaluate progress, and apply fresh gel for the next cycle. Most treatments involve 3-4 activation cycles for optimal results.
During cycles, you can't talk or close your mouth, but most patients find it surprisingly comfortable. Many listen to music, watch TV on ceiling-mounted screens, or simply meditate. The time passes quickly.
After the final cycle, we remove all gel and protective barriers, then thoroughly rinse your mouth. We apply desensitizing gel to minimize any potential sensitivity over the following 24-48 hours.
We take final photographs and use the shade guide again to document your remarkable improvement.
Most patients are stunned by the dramatic difference visible immediately. We review aftercare instructions (primarily avoiding staining foods/drinks for 48 hours), answer questions, and send you on your way with your brilliant new smile.
Total appointment time: 60-90 minutes from arrival to departure.

Your teeth will be noticeably whiter the moment you leave our office. Most patients achieve 6-10 shade improvement on the dental shade scale. Yellow or brown-toned stains respond best, while gray-toned discoloration (from medications or trauma) may show less dramatic improvement.
Your teeth reach their absolute whitest point immediately after treatment. Over the next 24-48 hours, as enamel rehydrates (whitening temporarily dehydrates teeth slightly), color may darken by about half a shade—this is normal and expected. The shade stabilizes after 48 hours at what will be your maintained color.
Not all teeth whiten uniformly. Front incisors typically lighten most dramatically because they have the thinnest enamel. Canines (the pointed teeth) often stay slightly darker because they naturally have more internal dentin showing through. This variation is normal and usually creates a natural-looking gradient rather than appearing problematic.
Existing dental work (crowns, veneers, fillings, bonding) won't change color at all—they stay their original shade while natural teeth brighten. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, we discuss beforehand whether you'll need to replace them after whitening to match your new brighter shade.
In-office whitening typically stays bright for 1-3 years with proper maintenance. Factors affecting duration include:
You can maintain results indefinitely with periodic touchup treatments every 6-18 months. If you obtain custom whitening trays, at-home touchups take just 2-3 days. In-office touchup sessions (typically 30 minutes) are also available.

About 60-70% of patients experience some degree of tooth sensitivity in the 24-48 hours following in-office whitening. This is the most common side effect. Sensitivity ranges from mild (slight awareness when drinking cold water) to moderate (noticeable zingy sensation) but rarely reaches severe levels.
Whitening temporarily opens microscopic pores in tooth enamel, allowing bleaching agent to penetrate and lighten internal tooth structure. These open pores also temporarily expose nerve endings to temperature changes and air. As teeth remineralize over 24-72 hours, pores close and sensitivity disappears completely.
Before Treatment:
After Treatment:
We can adjust the treatment protocol—using slightly lower concentration gel, shorter activation cycles, or recommending at-home whitening instead (which causes significantly less sensitivity due to gentler, gradual process).
For most patients, any sensitivity is mild and manageable with over-the-counter medication, resolving completely within 2-3 days. The temporary minor discomfort is widely considered worthwhile for dramatically whiter teeth.
Have questions? We'd love to hear from you.
The first 48 hours after in-office whitening are crucial for maintaining your results. During this "white diet" period, teeth are particularly vulnerable to staining because enamel pores remain open and absorptive.
After 48 hours, resume normal eating while practicing moderation with high-staining items. Rinse with water after consuming coffee or wine to minimize re-staining.
Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel—it won't lighten crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding. If you have visible dental work on front teeth and whiten, your natural teeth will become lighter while restorations stay their original shade, creating obvious mismatch. You'd need to replace restorations after whitening to match your new color.
Gray-toned discoloration (often from tetracycline antibiotics or tooth trauma) responds poorly compared to yellow-brown stains. Very thin enamel or heavily worn teeth may cause excessive sensitivity. Teeth with large fillings may not whiten evenly.
We evaluate your specific situation during consultation and honestly advise whether in-office whitening will achieve your goals or if alternatives (veneers, at-home whitening, bonding) make more sense.
