As a parent, watching your child feel scared or upset at the dentist is hard. You want to help, but sometimes kids just can't sit still or stay calm long enough for treatment. That's where pediatric sedation dentistry can help.
Why Do Some Kids Need Sedation?
Children aren't just small adults. Their brains are still growing, and they don't have the same coping skills we do. Some kids do great at the dentist. But others struggle because of:
- Fear of the unknown — New places and strange equipment can be scary
- Bad past experiences — A painful visit can create lasting fear
- Trouble sitting still — Some kids just can't stay in one place
- Special needs — Children with autism, ADHD, or sensory issues may need extra help
- Lots of dental work needed — Multiple cavities are hard to fix in short visits
Sedation helps children relax so they can get the care they need. It also creates a better experience, which helps prevent dental fear later in life.
Sedation Options for Kids
At Dental Sedation Ottawa, we offer several options for children:
Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)
Laughing gas is the mildest form of sedation. Your child breathes it through a small mask on their nose. They feel relaxed and maybe a little silly. The effects wear off in just a few minutes after the mask comes off.
This works well for kids who are a little nervous but can still cooperate.
Oral Sedation
For moderate anxiety, we can give your child a liquid medicine to drink before their appointment. This makes them feel drowsy and calm. They'll still be awake, but they often don't remember the visit afterward.
General Anesthesia
For very anxious children, those with special needs, or kids who need a lot of dental work, general anesthesia may be the best choice. Your child sleeps through the entire treatment and wakes up when it's all done.
Hospital-Level Safety for Your Child
When children need general anesthesia, our medical anesthesiologists (Dr. Hesham Talab and Dr. Asad Mirghassemi) provide the sedation. They have the same training as hospital doctors and use hospital-grade equipment. Your child's safety is our top priority.
Is Sedation Safe for Children?
Yes, when done by trained professionals. At Dental Sedation Ottawa:
- We have over 25 years of experience with pediatric patients
- Our anesthesiologists are board-certified medical doctors
- We use hospital-level monitoring equipment
- We follow all Health Canada and Canadian Dental Association guidelines
Before your child's appointment, we'll review their health history and explain exactly what to expect. We're happy to answer all your questions.
How to Prepare Your Child
Here are some tips to help your child feel ready:
- Stay calm yourself — Kids pick up on parents' emotions
- Use simple, positive words — Avoid words like "hurt" or "shot"
- Read books about the dentist — Stories can make the visit feel normal
- Don't bribe with rewards — This can make kids think something bad is coming
- Follow fasting instructions — For sedation, your child may need to skip food and drinks beforehand
What Happens After Sedation?
After sedation, your child may feel sleepy or a little unsteady. This is normal. We'll watch them in our recovery area until they're ready to go home. For the rest of the day, they should:
- Rest and take it easy
- Start with light foods and drinks
- Skip sports and active play
- Have a parent or adult watch them closely
Most kids bounce back quickly and feel like themselves by the next day.
